In Theaters This Weekend

This... this rocks my socks.

Five years ago, Zack Snyder exploded with 300. But, before that, he gave us a chilling vision of an undead invasion with the remake of Dawn of the Dead. To date, Dead remains his best, brightest, and most important film. In a career full of masterpieces, with the grave exception of Legends of the Guardian, he's cemented his place as one of the most visually apt directors around. And with Sucker Punch, debuting to immense hype this weekend, he's set to only further that cement.

Greeting Sucker Punch in theaters half way is Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Roderick Rules.

But no one cares about that one.

More after the cut --
I'm only focusing on the two major releases right now, so this will be brief. But, let's take a look at them more closely, shall we?

Sucker Punch. PG-13.

Sucker Punch looks a lot like Kill Bill meets The Neverending Story with shades of Jane Eyre tossed in, right? Yes, yes it does. And I love every second of the trailer. The presence of Scott Glenn, Emily Browning's transcendence into the kick-ass hero she was always destined to be... the art direction, the sound mixing, all of it. I fell in love with Watchmen from the moment it started, and 300 grew on me like mold. Dawn of the Dead was perfect from conception. So, I'm obviously a bit excited for this, and will be seeing it as soon as possible. Probably with you.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Roderick Rules. PG.

There isn't a whole lot that can be said about this flick. Based on a popular book series, decently reviewed first film, okay cast. Why this got a sequel is beyond me. It wasn't a box office hit the first time around, and there's nothing to indicate that the demand for another Wimpy Kid movie is high enough to warrant a release. But, here we are nevertheless. Will I see it? Yeah, sure. Why not? I got some laughs out of the first one. But, am I chomping at the bit? Hell no.

There we have it. This weekend's major releases. Go see a movie. We all have a long week ahead of us.
